DAN'S TRAVEL BLOG #2 BALI SCHOOL VISIT

Dan and Lisa make a return visit to SDN 2 Gulingan Elementary School, in the second of this series of travel blog emails ...

During the second week of their shopping trip in Indonesia, Dan and Lisa took time out to make a return visit to the school attended by some of the chlidren of Makasi's employees in Bali. They headed off at 8am to meet the headmistress, Mrs Desak, and were greeted with a warm welcome at the school gates by all of the children coming to say hello and greeting them in the traditional way they greet their elders - see video.

Some of them remembered Dan and Lisa's previous visits over the last three years, and were practising their English by asking them lots of questions, like "how are you?" and "will you come back to see us again?"  The school visit and their interaction with the children is Dan and Lisa's favourite part of the whole trip - experiencing the children's happiness, friendliness and warmth in person is very humbling - see video. 😊

Dan and Lisa went up to the school office with the headmistress, Mrs Desak, for some deliciously refreshing fresh coconuts to drink and eat - see video. In exchange, Dan and Lisa gave the headmistress and staff everything they needed to have an English cream tea together, with scones, jam, cream, butter and PG tips. They also took them a jar of marmite to try - they will either love it or hate it! 😂

Mrs Desak then gave them a tour of the new buildiing and the library that Makasi has helped to decorate and furnish. The mural in the library is absolutely amazing, and the space looks so inviting - Mrs Desak told them that the children are always excited to use the library now and it has made them think of reading as a fun activity - mission accomplished! SDN 2 Gulingan Elementary School really has progressed in leaps and bounds since Dan and Lisa's first visit three years ago - it's now massively popular locally, with many parents now choosing to send their children there. Mrs Desak has just been promoted to Regional Manager overseeing an area of 15 schools in Bali - this is deserved recognition for her as she loves her job and her love and care for the children really shines through.

All too soon it was time to say goodbye - see video. We are very much looking forward to continuing our support for SDN 2 Gulingan Elementary, and the other schools that Mrs Desak is taking on. In fact we're already planning the next project, so watch this space!
